What & When Should You Eat Before Exercising?

Carbohydrates are used as your body’s main source of energy and will fuel you through your workout. Converted to glycogen by the body and stored in muscles to be used when needed, carbs are also essential for the digestion of proteins and fat. For each hour before exercise, eat 1g carbs for every 2.2 pounds of your body weight. Eat smaller quantities the closer you get to your workout to avoid stomach upset. Choose complex carbs in the form of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Here’s my pre-workout go to meal as it’s quick and easy to digest: Combine in a blender: 9 ounces almond milk, ¼ cup frozen berries, ½ banana, 2 cups packed spinach or kale, 1/8 cup walnuts, and a serving of vegan protein powder (Arbonne is my favorite – you can get it here).
